Aluminium Titanate for High Temperature Applications
Aluminium titanate (Al2TiO5) is an advanced material designed to withstand extreme conditions in non-ferrous molten metal applications, such as foundry casting and foundry foundries. Due to its unique property profile it makes Al2TiO5 ideal for foundry, casting and refractory uses such as ceramic crucibles, riser tubes and nozzles.
Sintered A/AT samples with added rutile content (0-40 weight percent) demonstrated enhanced sinterability and thermo-mechanical properties, with increasing rutile content leading to improved hysteresis area as intimate diffusion between Alumina grains and AT grains stopped their grain growth while increasing mechanical strength.
Corrosion Resistance
AlTi ceramics have seen a marked surge in their popularity over recent years. These versatile materials offer properties which perfectly suit modern industries and meet industry requirements.
These alloys feature near-eutectic compositions designed for AM processability and hot tear resistance, with outstanding corrosion resistance in sulphurous environments and molten metals such as copper. Their low tensile strength reduces risk of deposition or cracking in weld areas.
ALUTIT’s non-wettability with aluminum melt and superior thermal shock resistance make it ideally suited for foundry technology and metallurgical melting applications, such as CeramTec’s use of ALUTIT to make riser tubes measuring 1.75 meters for precision casting and dosing furnaces. Furthermore, its exceptional thermal stability prevents short circuits that might otherwise result in costly equipment failure.
Thermal Shock Resistance
Aluminum titanate’s high-temperature properties make it an ideal material for applications requiring a lightweight yet resilient material that can withstand sudden temperature shifts without cracking – for instance in kilns and furnaces where repeated cycles of heating and cooling need to occur without cracking occurring.
CUMI’s reaction sintered aluminium titanate is made using ultra-clean synthetic raw materials through a highly controlled reaction sintering process, yielding microporous material with excellent non-wettability for molten aluminium as well as strong resistance against slag, corrosion and wear.
Pressureless sintered green ballets with different rutile contents (0-40wt%) were examined under X-ray diffraction to observe their distribution and diffusion of Alumina-Terbium grains, as well as AT grains that show increasing concentration with increasing rutile addition; AT peak intensities increased while their counterpart Alumina ones became reduced.
High Thermal Conductivity
Aluminum titanate is an adaptable ceramic material, capable of being formed into various forms for use in high performance applications. Thanks to its thermal stability, Aluminum titanate can withstand sudden temperature changes without incurring costly equipment failure risks while increasing performance in demanding industrial environments.
Powder metallurgy technology was employed to manufacture A/AT composites using powder metallurgy techniques. Starting materials included calcined alumina with particle sizes d50 = 9.227 m and rutile ore (Kronos 3020 Silkem Tovarniska Cesta Slovenia).
Results demonstrated that adding rutile improved the mechanical properties of A/AT composites, with increases in both hysteresis area and modulus of rupture seen with increasing levels (up to 40% wt%) of rutile content in the composite structure, as well as an increase in its sintering density. This may be attributed to better distribution of Alumina/AT particles within its composite structure as well as an increase in density during sintering.
3D Printing
Aluminum metal is one of the most prevalent industrial manufacturing materials, used to make cans and kitchen utensils as well as high-performance components in cars and airplanes. Yet creating aluminum parts through powder-based additive manufacturing (AM) presents significant challenges that limit its growth potential for large batch and serial production applications.
Aluminum AM has enabled its use in innovative applications. Dispersion-strengthened alloys like Scalmalloy are providing lightweight parts that are hard to produce using traditional casting processes; aluminum titanium ceramics have also become popular as alternatives to metal exhaust systems and cylinder liners due to their thermal stability and low thermal expansion properties.
Automotive Applications
Aluminum titanate’s corrosion-resistance makes it the ideal material for automotive components exposed to extreme temperatures and harsh chemicals, and its lightweight nature contributes to fuel efficiency improvements. These properties make aluminum titanate an invaluable addition to the automotive industry and an attractive investment option for companies specializing in high-temperature materials.
Directionally solidified A/AT ceramics display excellent mechanical properties such as high strength and stiffness as well as good dimensional stability at high temperatures. However, sudden temperature shift environments call for further improvements and this can be accomplished by adding chemical additives to starting powders; this improves their thermal stability so they can withstand sudden fluctuations without cracking; plus it decreases their susceptibility to oxidation at elevated temperatures.
